Subject
During his journey in Italy, Goethe describes the Appia Antica landscape: “Today I’ve been at the Nymph Egeria, the Caracalla Baths and along the Via Appia where I’ve seen the ruined tombs and the best preserved one, which is Cecilia Metella’s tomb. This last one gives the right concept of the wall art’s solidity. The work of these men lasts an eternity, and all was calculated, except the disastrous ferocity of those who came later and in front of whom all had to fall”
