Subject
At the fourth milestone of the Appian Way, the Mausoleum of the Equinoxes is a tumulus tomb from the 2nd century BC, featuring a barrel vault seven metres high, remarkably well preserved. Its name derives from a unique phenomenon: on the days of the equinoxes, a ray of sunlight penetrates through the openings and illuminates the exact centre of the burial chamber.
