Jean-Honoré Fragonard, 1732-1806
In 1759, Fragonard traveled a stretch of the Appian Way together with Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non, known as L’Abbé de Saint-Non. At that time, the ancient street was in very poor condition: “l’ancienne Via Appia que l’on suit pendant plusieurs postes mais qui est si rompue et si mauvaise que l’on ne peut aller qu’au pas” (Journal de Voyage de l’Abbé de Saint-Non, A. Brejon and P. Rosenberg, 1986, p. 98).
