In his Roman Walks, Stendhal (1783 – 1842) encounters two churches along the Appian Way. His arrival at the Church of Domine Quo Vadis offers opportunity for a retelling of the well-known story of St. Peter, explaining the origin of the name. At the Church of Saint Urban he instead recalls a temple dedicated to the Muses, which once stood near the Nymphaeum of Egeria and whose portico was destroyed in the construction of this church.
